Day 33 - Waitomo
I was expecting another long rainy day today, but alas as I started hiking the clouds broke and a beautiful blue day come out. We all were very excited about it. For today aim for the tourist village of Waitomo, some 33km away.
11am photo, on some good track today. A pleasant change from yesterday.
A river crossing, surprisingly low for how much rain we received yesterday.
Much of the track was blissful, dry, root free tracks
I intended to walk into town, but at the last minute took a detour and decided to stay in a nearby hut. In turned out to be a hut usually taken up by cave explorers and other bigger thrill seekers. It had lots of cool maps and books about cave exploration. Much better than staying in a hostel in town.
The last week my shoes have started to deteriorate at an alarming rate. I superglued some duct tape over the holes. A vain attempt I’m sure, but hopefully it’ll extend the life of the shoes by a bit. I hoped to get a good 1500km out of the shoes, but they might only last 1200km at this rate.
Spent the evening watching the sun go down drinking some wine someone left in the hut, all
the while listening to a nearby farmer blast Zombie by the Cranberries on repeat. What a vibe.
