Gear

When walking 3000km every gram is accounted for. Having a light pack means I have less chance of injury, can go faster and farther, burn less calories, be less fatigued, and in turn enjoy myself a bit more. So I put a lot of effort into dialing in my gear.

I by no means have a ultralight, or even a lightweight setup, my base weight is still 7.4kg (16.3lbs). I’m not cutting my toothbrush in half, or cold soaking couscous every night (no offence to the ultra lighters;). I’d still like to be slightly comfortable. However, I am lighter than the average, and light enough where I feel like I won’t be causing unnecessary hardship.

A lighter pack will give me a better chance at be able to complete the trail, helping me mentally and physically. Te Araroa is known to be a tough trail on gear so fingers crossed things to go to far astray.
