Day 44 - Taumarunui

Now that we’ve finished the canoe section it’s time to go back up to Taumarunui to the Tongariro Crossing. First , a big shop in town for 5 days worth. A heavy pack:(

To get back to Taumarunui you can get a bus, but it was 50$ which is ridiculous so we opted to try and hitch hike. A 2hr drive by car. Me and Lea went first while everyone else was watching the new Avatar movie at the theatre.

It took four hitches in all but we got there eventually.

Our second hitch was an older local who could not stop talking, I think he picked us up so he had someone to talk too.

In the town of national park we got a good look at  Tongariro National Park. An absolute beautiful rocky volcanic expanse on the horizon.

The bathroom had a poster about what to do when a volcanic eruption occurs when you’re skiing.

Our fourth hitch took over an 2 hours to get, we went a little crazy. Only when it started to get dark did an old farmer pick us up and drive us all the way. He knew the family who owned the canoe company, so he had some pity on us. But we made it eventually back to Taumarunui.
