Day 57 - Palmerston North

Today another zero day. The weather in the tararuas is still bad, but the main reason is that I have an important job to do. I’m nearly ready to head to the South Island. Here the trail goes through much more remote areas where I won’t have access to grocery stores. As such I need to buy food and post it down trail in a box. I will be shipping these resupply boxes to alpine lodges that the trail passes by. I have two stretches, each about a week long, that I need to buy food for. It’s a big logistical annoyance for now, planning how many days, accounting for bad weather, how to send it, what food I want and what’s stays good in a box for a month etc. You really need a zero day to plan it all.

Here’s 20 days of food, the resupply boxes and food for the tararuas. RIP my wallet. 40 packs of tuna ready to go. I packed everything into ziplock bags and organized what I bought outside the grocery store which attracted a lot of attention. Everyone had lots questions of what I was doing.

All packed up in the post office. Ready to go. I included some treats in there for down trail to look forward to.

Back at the trail angel I met up with Lindy who was staying the night as well. Good to see a familiar face I haven’t seen in a while.
