Day 60 - Waitewaewae Hut

Up and early this morning. When you sleep in a hut everyone gets up at the same time. Whoever gets up first inadvertently wakes the rest.

An absolutely gorgeous start to the day once I broke the tree line and got the views. The morning light was spectacular. I’m glad I waited for a decent weather window. A chance to see the Tararuas in all their glory.

The day was nothing short of Epic. An entire day of riding ridge lines on the top of the world. Some of the ridge were really narrow with steep drop offs on either side. But this is why it’s the best form of hiking, an element of risk and guaranteed views.

Yes this is the trail. Feet placement was very tricky because of the tufts of grass growing over the trail. Many slips and trips were to be had.

I took lunch at the Nichols hut, my original place to stay at night, but I heard that it’s a bit run down. But mostly because it is a 6 bed hut and over 10 people are going to be there tonight. I’m in the midst of the hiker bubble.

As I climbed to the highest point, Mt. Crawford, as the clouds start to roll in. Made for a very atmospheric climb.

As we descended into the valley bottom, once more we passed through some mythical forests. Pretty sure I stumbled though Fangorn.

I reached the hut for the night, Waitiwaewae, a brand new swanky 18 bed hut. A quick swim in the cold river, a quick dinner, and off to bed. 26km 1400m ascent, 2000m descent. I think this has been my favourite day yet. Challenging, scenic, good company, what more could you ask.
