Day 94 - Lake Tekapo
It was a cold night. The coldest night so far on trail. I am on top of a mountain so I guess that checks out. So cold I had to put some more layers on in the night. When I woke up in the morning my tent was surrounded by the cold wet clouds. I may not get a sunrise I thought. But just as the sun peaked over the range the clouds dissipated and gave me what I wanted.
I scrambled up nearby Beuzenberg Peak to get a view of the southern alps in all their glory. My first proper view of them. I was blown away. Stunning. A sunrise to match last nights sunset.
I continued down from Stag Saddle down an exposed ridgeline that gave me views of the alps all the way down. A very scenic day, and perfectly clear too. Very lucky. Even though I had a long day ahead of me I couldn’t help but stop and take photos constantly.
It was a ripper hot day. Exhausting work even though I was going downhill all day.
Lake Tekapo is an extremely blue lake. Lake Louise level blue. Gatorade Blue. If only it was actually Gatorade.
The last 15km was a road walk. But for once I didn’t mind, the views from the road were still incredible.
I reached the town of Tekapo, a small tourist town. Accommodation can be hard to come by here, and expensive. Luckily I have a friend from last summer in Waterton that lives here now, and I’m able to crash at his. I went to the restaurant he works at and he was kind enough to get me some beers and food. Absolute legend.
