Day 20 - Pakiri
Hot days out here, summer has well and truly arrived. Good thing it’s mostly beach walking today, some 29?km.
11am photo, starting the beach section.
A more or less simple day for views. But the ocean made up for it, every now and again I would go swimming to cool off.
I passed lots of dead penguins, sadly a sight not uncommon on the shores of the Northlands so far. They are the little blue penguin or Kororā (Eudyptula minor). There has been a large die off this spring due to warmer seas driving their prey into deeper cooler waters. This is caused in large part, by global warming.
Sign at the end of the beach. It’s nesting season and there is lots of fledgling birds and eggs about. The mother birds will chase you around if you get too close.
Camp for the night, a plot costs 20$ and we can fit all 5 tents with ease.
