Day 75-76 St. Arnaud
A neero (Near Zero Km, hikers are very original at naming things) today to get into the town of St. Arnaud. It was a rainy start so I elected to take an old atv track instead of the normal route. From the end of the track it was a 10km road walk into town, and the Richmond Ranges were behind me.
St. Arnaud is a small tourist town on the front of Nelson Lakes National Park. After the Richmond’s I was keen for a large beer and a pizza from the Alpine Lodge. At. Arnaud has one restaurant, and a gas station. There was lots of hikers in town, I’d estimate some 40 in the town. Most walkers stay the night and send food resupply boxes to the Alpine Lodge where they charge 15$ to hold it. The Alpine Lodge absolutely loves Te Araroa walkers. Together we spend an insane amount of money here.
I spent a zero day in St. Arnaud to get some logistics figured out and get myself organized. An office day. I was staying at the DOC campsite which was much cheaper than town, but sneaked into the Alpine Lodge Hostel to charge my devices and cook food. I spent enough money at their restaurant to feel guilt free. The common room was filled with stinky TA walkers all inside taking a zero as well.
