Day 70 - Rock Hut
A late start today. I meant to pickup my phone and get onto the trail first thing. When I picked up my phone however, it was dead. The owner had plugged it in wrong last night. So I waited an hour and a half for it to charge up for real while I read my book. I need full battery for the longer section ahead.
11 am photo. The day started with a forestry road walk to get towards the park. I met a friendly grandfather, father, and son cyclist trio who were very excited about my trip. The dad is going to Canada to ski at Big White soon and I told him all about it.
While yesterday was overcast and mild, today brings back the hot humid weather. Today was the perfect place for such weather. The river was absolute mint for swimming holes. Every turn there was a beautiful crystal clear emerald pools with perfectly cool water to swim in.
A slow day today, stopping far too fast often to go swimming. The sand flies were the worst I’ve seen though. Before I had maybe a few dozen flying around me. Here I easily had hundreds swarming me, can’t stay still for a second.

At the end of the day I pushed past a hut on the river to climb a mountain to the next hut. A hard climb for the end of the day. Here’s some rooty paths on the way up.
I reached Rock Hut and was very surprised to find that I was the only one up here. I couldn’t believe my luck. From what I’ve been hearing the huts in the Richmond’s and Nelson area have been overflowing with people. I think I’m in between bubbles of hikers right now. Hopefully I can ride this as long as I can. I put 3 sleeping mattresses together for a nice King size bed. An even bigger surprise is that there is flush toilets up here. I can honestly say its the first flush toilets in the backcountry I’ve ever used. Apparently they can pump water to the hut from a nearby spring. Living in luxury tonight.
